Welcome to #4! As promised, here's the "Geff's Recommended CD's & DVD's" issue; this is the first one since December of 2008!
Every CD & DVD listed this week is something that I personally own (or have the same songs/movie on a similar release) & really like! And for the first time in a Geff's recommended issue every title is on sale!
But first, here's a quick housekeeping item:

For those who've been with us for years I apologize for recycling the following which was originally written in the early '00's, but I don't think i could improve on it if I started from scratch!
The most important thing for me in enjoying music is that it must make me feel something I was watching a show on PBS awhile back about this They were speculating that the reason music causes some many emotions in us is that we may have communicated with song before words That would make sense; I've noticed many times that a simple chord or 2 can evoke strong feelings After that, other important things to me in musical enjoyment include technical ability, and again attributes that fit my personal filters & prejudices As an example, I still enjoy 60's bubblegum at certain times because I grew up with it (Herman's Hermits, Tommy James, Grass Roots); but today's boy & girl bands just don't do it for me! The point isn't whether Britney is more or less talented then Peter Noone; the point is that 60's kid's music was imprinted on me when I was a kid, but new examples of that sort of music doesn't connect for me as an adult
As a little kid, the first music I remember spending any time with was my Father's Chad Mitchell trio & Duke Ellington records I believe I managed to pretty thoroughly trash a couple of his Ellington records!
(Due to my age) Rock pretty much started for me with the Beatles With a very few exceptions, 50's rock doesn't do much for me; Although I am fond of some 50's jazz, R&B & Jump Am Top 40 music in the early-mid 60;s really influenced my taste in music Radio was much different then now; even the top 40 format was much more varied then the narrow Broadcasting most stations assault us with today! An average 30 minutes of Top 40 radio in the mid-late 60's could easily go from Petula Clark, to Iron Butterfly, to Ramsey Lewis, to Tommy James, & finish with the Jefferson Airplane! I learned to enjoy much 60's top 40 & hard rock
In the 70's I loved lots of the more accessible progressive & hard rock (Wishbone Ash, Deep Purple), Glam (Bowie, Mott, The Tubes, Alice Cooper) & the singer-songwriters (Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Cockburn, CSNY, Joni Mitchell) I remember that one "guilty pleasure" was Grand Funk, they were considered uncool, but I liked them anyway On the other hand, many of the arena groups (Kiss isa good example here) never did anything for me I also discovered fusion jazz (mostly CTI & ECM) for a few years Both punk & disco didn't do anything for me
I enjoyed much of the music that was popular on MTV in the 80's, & I stayed pretty current in my taste with grunge & alternative singer-songwriter stuff through the late/mid 90's I finally got to the point around 1998 where much new music no longer connected for me; I think I made it to a later age then most of my friends before this happened, though! Especially rap & techno don't make a whole lot of sense for me
About 13 years ago, I rediscovered old jazz; mostly from the 20's-50's (especially Duke Ellington & his peers) & have had a fun time learning the music ever since Regular readers are probably getting sick of hearing about my current favorites; they would include Lisa Loeb, Shari Ulrich, The Grateful Dead, Maria McKee, Marillion, Tori Amos, CSNY Wishbone Ash & classic films to name but a few!
My musical taste is actually quite a bit wider then this indicates, but hopefully it gives you some idea of where the following recommendations are coming from & which may fit for you Of course my recommendations in this newsletter are limited by what we currently have in stock, but there are some gems here!

* David Crosby - Oh Yes I Can (sealed) - This is the 2003 remastered edition of the out of print 1990 classic I've become a huge Crosby fan since he sobered up He is certainly the only member of CSN still making vital music at this late time in their career This cd was poorly promoted, but is full of great music, especially Tracks In the Dust, one of Crosby's best songs ever Great sounding remaster, has been out of print for several years, but we've got it for you factory sealed! * David Crosby - From the Front Row: Live! (Sealed DVD-A) - Interesting release This is the same concert as the King Biscuit commercial release, but with a brand new strikingly different mix & a different running order I only listened to the 96/24 dvd-a stereo mix & can't comment on the surround option, but where the dvd-a mix is especially different from the original cd is that KBFH has always folded in ALOT of hall/audience ambiance in there mixes, that's not present in this mix I personally prefer it this way, though there's one shortfall: I never noticed it on the KBFH cd, but DC's voice is not in good shape this evening The cd mix largely hid the clunker notes, this mix brings the vocals front & center At any rate, I definitely recommend this to any DC fan, at minimum it's a totally different way to hear the album 1989 show in support of the Oh Yes I Can album Includes Tracks In The Dust, Guinevere, Compass, Delta, Deja Vu, Wooden Ships, Almost Cut My Hair, Long Time Gone & more In my (not very humble) opinion, of the 4 members of CSNY, Crosby has been making by far the most vital music of them all for the last 10 years or so (since he sobered up) 24/96 LPCM Stereo DVD-a & 24/96 Dolby 5 1 surround options The case is craked Silverline 81909 Was $8 99, this week $7 99

* Dan Reed Network - s/t - Awesome cd Like their entire catalog, this is out of print in the US >From Portland in the mid-80's, this is their 1st & best album With a blend of Funk & Hard rock, they sound a bit like Prince when he's in his hard rock mode, and are all awesome players Oddly, they were huge in Europe, where they opened for the Stones & Bon Jovi; but never made it here If you like this style, I can't recommend this one enough This includes their only US hits, Get To You, & Ritual There is an import edition, but it separates the 1st 2 songs, which are joined together on this original USA version Mercury 834309 Was $7 99, this week $6 99

* Spirit - Rock & Roll Planet 1977-1979 (Sealed UK 3 cd set) - We got you a great buy on this, I paid way more for mine! By far the best album of the post Jay Ferguson incarnations of Spirit was from the line up covered here It was known on vinyl as "Live Spirit" (UK), "Spirit Live" (USA) & "Spirit Live in Germany" All 3 were variations of the same amazing show, with more overdubs on the US edition & a bit less on the UK & German versions The only cd release was a now long out of print UK only set called "Live At The Rainbow 1978" that currently sells on Amazon for $56 & up Which brings us to this set Apparently the rights to the Rainbow show are currently in legal limbo, so Acadia who has worked with Ed Cassidy & the late Randy California's estate on a series of rarities releases, did the next best thing: they gathered the best of the other live tapes from '77-'79 (+ a 3rd disc of unreleased studio recordings from the same period) & put out this set I'm not going to tell you it's as good as the oop Rainbow (it isn't; very few live albums are), but for Spirit fans this is still good stuff! Here's a quote from an online review I wrote in July 2008 after I'd owned the disc for 10 days,
"While I would still choose Live Spirit/Live At The Rainbow over this, the 2 live discs have been spending a lot of time in my cd players While almost totally different then the original Spirit band, this version of the band really was great & while the sound quality does vary quite a bit, I'm really enjoying the 2 live discs

* Nikka Costa - Can'tneverdidnothin' - When we first got this in in July of 2005, I gave it a quick listen & basically wrote "Very nice sophomore effort from the great soul vocalist " I personally also own Nikka's first album & really like it, but I get so many new cd's in to listen too, that I really hadn't had a chance to spend much time with this one until I dropped this in the car stereo in 2006 when i was in the right mood & it smokes!! What kept coming up for me was that this is what Tina Turner should have / would have sounded like if she'd chosen to go with a harder edge after leaving Ike, rather then the sugary pop dreck she made such a good living with And then, after thinking that several times over, I heard Nikka break into Tina's Funkier Then A Mosquito's Tweeter! Now for the confusing part where I try to describe this: This is said to be "The Complete" soundtrack to New Orleans "+ additional recordings" It also lists Billie Holiday as the principle artist The second statement is misleading; the first part may also be Holiday sings on only 3 songs, the rest are great rare recordings from Louis Armstrong & a small band with Barney Bigard While they call this complete, Disconforme released 2 versions of the soundtrack in 1999; This version & another on their Soundtrack Factory imprint (above) Each has some songs not on the other which is why I question the complete part (we're all about honesty at Dandylion Records!) * Lost In Translation (Sealed DVD) - My favorite film from 2003 Stars Bill Murray in possibly his greatest role as a washed up US actor still popular in Japan who has gone to Japan to make a series of TV commercials While dealing with his loneliness at being out of the country he meets a young early 20's bride (Scarlet Johansen) in Japan with her businessman husband who's there on business who's also quite lonely They bond closely but (barely) manage to keep it platonic due to a last minute attack of moral consideration from Murray's character Actually a very touching film, much better then my description would indicate! * Ninotchka (Sealed DVD) - In 1930, Anna Christie was marketed as "Garbo Talks" 9 years later, Ninotchka was marketed with the similar "Garbo Laughs"! At the time, GG's actually laughing on screen was almost as controversial as her first talky in 1930! This is actually a really enjoyable comedy, & as a great extra features Bela Lugosi in one of the few roles where he didn't play a monster, mad scientist, criminal, etc Bela really could act; it was a shame he was rarely given the opportunity garbo also proves here she was capable of comedic acting This is good stuff, & one of several films we're offering this week that I consider essential Again, highly recommended to fans of classics, Garbo or Lugosi Directed by the great Ernst Lubitsch & written by Billy Wilder! $19 98 list price This is a cutout Warner 56682 Was $7 99, this week $6 99

* Return Of The Vampire (Sealed DVD) - Ok, Bela Lugosi fans, you've got to pick this one up! While a later period film that does have a tacky Werewolf costume, this is basically Bela reprising his role as Dracula Universal owned the rights to the name "Dracula", so here Bela is "Armand Tesla", but it's largely an older version of the same character The only other time bela got to play the vampire after this was in an Abbot & Costello B-flick Bela was actually quite good in that, but I have trouble getting past A&C's constant irritation If like me you're a Lugosi fan, I recommend this, I paid quite a bit more for my copy! * Sweet & Lowdown (Sealed DVD) - This is the rare "flipper", one side is widescreen, & the other side is full screen Combine Django Reinhardt, Sean Penn & Woody Allen, & what do you get - Allen's best film of the 2000's! Superb comedy stars pen in a role loosely based on the great jazz guitarist Samantha Morton does a stellar job as Penn's girl friend, in fact this film was the first I saw her in & I was hooked If you only get one Allen film from this decade, this is the one Highly recommended Allen wrote & directed, but does not act in this one In fact, one of it's strengths is that this is one of a very few Allen films that doesn't have a "Woody Allen character" Columbia 04757 Was $9 99, this week $6 99 (3)

* Under The Cherry Moon (Sealed DVD) - While not nearly as popular as it's predecessor Purple Rain, In my opinion this is a much better film Shot in black & white as it takes an obvious influence from early European drama, Noir & even Expressionism; this was also the first major film (4th overall) from actress Kristen Scott-Thomas along with Price & Jerome Benton from the Time Some great music, too!
